9 Days, 3 Ways to Dance, Butoh and Physical Theatre

Ombak-Ombak Arts Studio and PEARL are collaborating to bring an intensive nine-day workshop in dance, butoh and physical theatre which is open to the public.

Called  9 Days, 3 Ways, this workshop is led by trailblazing Malaysian performance artists – Liu Yong Sean (Dancer + Choreographer), Soonufat Supramaniam (Butoh Artist) and Izzard Padzil (Physical Theatre Artist). Each of the artists will share with the participants their individual emerging methods of performance approach and style.

If you want to:

  • Expand your versatility and flexibility
  • Learn different approaches and strengthen your performance skills
  • Discover your own unique performance identity

then 9 Days, 3 Ways is the perfect workshop for you.

The workshop is divided into 2 parts with the first part including a 3-day x 3hr workshop introduction by each artist:

23 March, 1pm – 4 pm: Dance with Liu Yong Sean
24 March, 6pm – 9pm: Physical Theatre with Izzard Padzil

Following this would be the intensive workshop lab sessions of the individual artists. Participants are free to choose either one or two artists to follow depending on their personal preference. Allowance is made for participants who want to follow all three artists. The schedule for these five days (24 – 29 March) is as follows:

Rising from devastating aftermath of the earthquake that struck Japan in 2011, one Japanese contemporary dance company turned to art express the mood of the nation.

Nibroll, in their latest work see/saw, explores the themes of life and death. This production, which premiered in Yokohama in 2012, is being staged for the first time outside Japan right here in Penang.

The Contemporary Dances of cieLaroque Come to Penang

“One of the most touring ensembles of Austrian dance scene”, cieLaroque | helene weinzierl comes to Penang this month with two of their most reputed contemporary dance pieces – 301 3 01 IS IT ME and THINK FISH.

301 3 01 IS IT ME

IS IT ME is a collaboration between Helene Weinzierl and the talented Salzburgian dancer Yuri Korec in 2013. We can see an artist with his fictional character but it is hard to distinguish the difference between them. Which part of his personality does live in his character: self-doubt or self-love? Which aspects are real?

THINK FISH

In THINK FISH, we can see a couple and feel that they are not in a perfect harmony. It seems to be exhausting, unhealthy, laborious, and somehow it appears to be unpleasant, the harmony is missing. The absurdity reaches a peak when the structures of power collapse and dissolve due to missing or misunderstood communication.

The Restaurant of Many Orders

The acclaimed Japanese director and choreographer Hiroshi Koike brings us his latest work, The Restaurant of Many Orders which is part of the Koike Hiroshi Bridge Project. Said to be a physical theatre piece, this performance takes from Kenji Miyazawa’s famous children’s story of the same title and revolves around the theme of human and nature and the relationship between the two.

The Restaurant of Many Orders promises to be an enthralling piece of performance art in the vein of Koike’s earlier project, Pappa Tarahumara, lacing  traditional and contemporary dance with whimsical and surreal story-telling.
